Tonight's Meet

Hi everyone!

We have received a few questions regarding the heat for our meet this afternoon. We completely understand that the extreme heat can be worrisome, and the safety of our swimmers, volunteers, coaches, officials, and spectators is always our highest priority.

While some outdoor sports may choose to cancel activities due to high temperatures, swim meets are managed differently because athletes spend much of their time in the water and typically have breaks between events. That said, we recognize that everyone at the meet—not just the swimmers—will be exposed to the heat, and we are taking that seriously.

We will be encouraging everyone to stay well hydrated throughout the evening by drinking water regularly, even before they feel thirsty. Swimmers will be reminded to remain in the shade whenever they are not racing, wear lightweight clothing over their suits when possible, and cool off in the water or other designated areas as needed. Coaches will continue to monitor swimmers for signs of heat-related illness and will not hesitate to have a swimmer sit out if there are any concerns.

We are also asking our volunteers and officials to take care of themselves by staying hydrated, seeking shade whenever possible, wearing hats and sunscreen, and rotating out of positions for breaks if needed. We encourage all families to bring water, sports drinks, cooling towels, umbrellas or canopies, and portable fans if they have them.

As with any outdoor event, we will continue to monitor conditions throughout the evening. At this time, however, we do not anticipate canceling the meet.

Ultimately, parents know their children best. If at any point you feel your swimmer is becoming overheated or is not feeling well, please let a coach know. We fully support families making the decision they believe is best for their child.

Thank you!

Erin
